What is energy?

Energy is the capacity to do work or produce heat. It shows up everywhere: the electricity powering your laptop, the chemical energy in the food you eat, the kinetic energy of a moving car, and the thermal energy your furnace delivers. The joule (J) is the SI (metric) unit of energy, defined as the work done when a force of one newton acts over one meter (1 J = 1 N·m). Why so many energy units?

Different fields adopted their own convenient units. Electricity bills use kilowatt-hours; nutrition labels use kilocalories (written as "Calories"); heating and cooling equipment uses BTU; physics at the atomic scale uses the electron-volt. A joule is a small amount of energy, so for household electricity the kilowatt-hour (3.6 million joules) is far easier to read on a bill.

The base-unit method

This converter routes every value through joules first. We convert your "from" unit into joules (the base), then divide by the target unit's joule factor. Because the math is pure multiplication and division, results are exact to six decimal places. For example, to turn kilowatt-hours into BTU: 1 kWh = 3,600,000 J, and 1 BTU = 1055.05585 J, so 1 kWh = 3,600,000 ÷ 1055.05585 ≈ 3412.14 BTU.

Calories on food labels are kilocalories

A frequent misunderstanding is the "calorie." In chemistry, 1 calorie (small c) raises 1 gram of water by 1 °C and equals 4.184 J. But the Calorie printed on food packages is actually a kilocalorie — 1000 chemistry calories, or 4184 J. So when a snack says "200 Calories," it means 200 kcal = 837,000 J. Our tool treats "calorie" as the small unit and "kilocalorie" as 1000× larger, which is the rigorous convention.

Real-world examples

A typical US household uses about 30 kWh per day, or 108 megajoules. A banana provides roughly 105 kcal ≈ 439,000 J of chemical energy. Boiling 1 liter of water from 20 °C to 100 °C needs about 334,000 J ≈ 317 BTU. A single AAA battery holds around 5000 J. And a lightning bolt can carry roughly 10⁹ J — enough to power a home for weeks. Common mistakes

One error is confusing a calorie with a kilocalorie on nutrition math — off by a factor of 1000.
